Project Overview
Bechtel and Westinghouse Electric Company have partnered to deliver the first AP1000 nuclear power reactors in Poland for our customer, the Polish Entity Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ). Bechtel will be the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for the project. As the EPC, our responsibilities will include providing the design for the Turbine Island and Balance of Plant as well as the construction of the entire facility. This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity, and we are looking for the talent that will help expand Poland’s nuclear base and build a strong and long-lasting energy future for generations to come. This position is subject to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) regulations at 10 CFR Part 810 (Part 810), which govern the transfer of hardware, materials, and technology to support the construction and operation of commercial nuclear power plants overseas.
Job Summary
In this role, you will plan, develop, and review electrical engineering design work, produce drawings and documentation, and prepare design estimates for a project. You will coordinate with clients, facilitate technical discussions, and review key electrical drawings, calculations, and bid summaries. You will solve complex technical issues and ensure electrical designs comply with all regulations and standards.
Major Responsibilities
- Supporting, coaching, and training less experienced designers.
- Modelling of electrical rooms, equipment, cable tray, conduit, underground distribution (such as conduit duct bank), lighting, receptacles, etc. in a Smartplant 3D model environment.
- Creating bill of materials and drawing installation details for the modelled items listed above in addition to grounding, lightning protection, support details, and other details using SmartSketch and AutoCAD.
- Performing calculations utilizing AGI 32 for lighting layouts and ETAP for ground grid layouts.
- Assist with coordination of 3D model activities, i.e. input, interference reconciliation, etc. with other physical related disciplines.
- Responsible for physical design implementation by producing drawings of interior and exterior layouts/plans/elevation views of the raceway design (conduit/cable tray/duct bank), equipment location and layout, lighting layouts, lightning protection layouts, and grounding plans.
- Coordinate with systems engineering department to establish and verify design/project requirements.
- Capable of independent creative design, with direction, using Bechtel and industry-proven concepts, and procedures. Ensures electrical systems designs comply with all applicable installation codes, regulations, and standards.
- Plans, develops, coordinates and reviews design work within a small-size Electrical design work group on projects of medium size or assignments in support of global business unit
- Produces drawings and documentation in accordance with established design and scope including design of earthwork, drainage, road design, foundation, and steel detailing. Ensures Electrical systems designs comply with all applicable installation codes, regulations, and standards.
Other Major Responsibilities
- Coordinates and interfaces as directed with the day-to-day technical work of Electrical engineers, scientists, specialists, designers and drafters
- Communicates complex technical issues and recommends solutions to upper management
- Facilitates technical discussions with third parties (client, suppliers, regulators)
- Prepares or oversees the preparation of Electrical design estimates and work plan in accordance with project scope, schedule and budget, and manages implementation and performance accordingly
- Coordinates with client representatives as delegated to obtain approval on phases of work
- Reviews key Electrical engineering drawings and calculations and bid summaries
- Mentors Electrical designers and drafters by providing appropriate on-the-job training for their professional development
- Assists in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs for proposals, forecasts, and change orders
Education and Experience Requirements
- Requires an AA/AS or Certificate in Engineering/CAD and 10-12 years of relevant experience or 12-14 years of relevant work experience
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Hands‑on and advanced experience using design and 3D modelling tool such as Smartplant 3D, SmartSketch, and AutoCAD.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written and level B2 or better, and Polish C2/ Native Language level.
- Must be able to collaborate well with other disciplines.
- Must be able to express technical issues in a clear and concise manner, both written and verbally.
- Must have experience with an electronic Cable Management System, such as the SETROUTE program, and be able to input and complete corrections to the database.
- Ability to resolve design issues independently and collaboratively with other engineering disciplines, construction, and the client.
- Ability to cope with conflicting deadlines, frequent interruptions, and multiple tasks.
- Relevant experience includes, but is not limited to, drawings for electrical systems and equipment on nuclear or industrial process facilities, data centres, central utility plants, or complex building electrical systems.
- Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
- Ability to utilize engineering and office automation tools effectively.
- Broad knowledge of the application of electrical engineering design principles.
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems, schematics, and layouts.
- Thorough knowledge of engineering deliverables, such as drawings and specifications.
- Power distribution Relay protection design and management
Other Required Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of ATEX regulations and standards (Directive 2014/34/EU, PN-EN 60079).
- Preferred: Licensed Professional Design Engineer (Poland) - Electrical engineer authorized to independently perform technical design tasks in construction, with experience in designing electrical and power installations. Holds unrestricted building qualifications in the electrical specialty and is a registered member of the Polish Chamber of Civil Engineers (PIIB)
- Highly collaborative, with the ability to work effectively across disciplines and within team environments.
- Extensive knowledge and application of Polish laws, European regulations, and industry and regulatory codes and standards supporting design and/or layout criteria pertinent to the particular discipline.
- Experience developing permitting design drawings and requirements in Poland.
- Ability to utilize engineering and office automation tools effectively.
- Previous hands‑on or extensive working knowledge with ETAP and other industry-wide electrical system design tools, such as CAD 2D and 3‑D Computer Aided Design (CAD), AGI32 software, cable designing and routing software.
- Knowledge of systems, calculations, equipment, applications of methods, materials, and computers in the discipline.
