Our engineers develop the next-generation technologies in HVDC (High Voltage Direct Current) that enable the transmission of electricity over long distances and via submarine cables, providing access to electricity for billions of people around the globe. You will work in our global R&D organization on a specific development project critical to Hitachi Energys needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve.

The current technology has enabled the connection of renewable energy such as large offshore wind and remote solar generators to the grid, bringing clean energy to large cities. Our team is a part of Hitachi Energy Technology and Solutions Development in Krakow, Poland, and is responsible for the development of semiconductor-based HVDC and SVC converter valves. At our site in Krakow, we employ more than 100 people working on converter development, electronics, and control.

Reporting to Małgorzata Szewczyk-Jaszczyńska, R&D Manager, supported by Agnieszka Wojtysiak, Low Voltage Power Electronics Development Manager for Poland, and Magnus Edberg, Global HVDC Valve Development Manager, you will cooperate and be supported by our global R&D teams and experts. A creative environment allows you to utilize your knowledge and skills in technology and product development to identify and implement innovative solutions for a new Product Platform.

Your responsibilities:

• Be part of the design process for our future HVDC converter cells and other power electronic sub-systems of our converter stations, taking a leading role to take new ideas from idea generation through simulation, circuit design, prototyping, all the way to verification.
• Take responsibility for specification, selection, qualification, and verification of semiconductors, passive components, and protection concepts.
• Contribute to feasibility studies on converter topologies, while gaining knowledge on Power Grids applications and requirements.
• Support a fast, iterative design process in a cross-functional, dedicated team. Use fast prototyping and lab mockups to close learning loops and achieve results quickly.
• Build up and maintain measurement and test setups to verify performance, efficiency, and robustness.
• Contribute to solving technical challenges related to EMC/EMI, thermal management, and safety.

Your background:

• You are curious and interested in sustainability and the ongoing energy transition and want to work on key technologies to solve one of the biggest challenges for humanity today.
• You are a natural team player and enjoy collaborating with others, have a solutions-oriented approach, and strong communication skills.
• You have a BSc or MSc in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or comparable, and at least 3 years of professional experience working in the field.
• You have proven experience with development processes for power electronic converters or power supplies and are competent with working with laboratory equipment and converter prototyping and testing.
• Ideally, you can complement this with experience with simulation tools like Spice, SIMetrix, Simulink, or PLECS and/or understanding of control theory for power electronics applications.
• You know tools like Altium & Team Center.
• You bring a high level of self-motivation, curiosity, and desire to learn about new technologies.
• As you will be part of a global business, fluency in written and spoken English is required.
