Offer Description

The Space Research Centre PAS is the only institute in Poland, whose activities are related to research of the Earth and Solar System bodies, using space and satellite technologies.

In connection with the conducted research project “Investigation of the 3-D distribution of Hard X-ray sources related to solar eruptions: verification of the standard flare model scenario.”, funded by the Polish National Science Center (NCN) we are currently looking for candidates for the position:

Postdoctoral Researcher (WR.110.K.5.2025)

Responsibilities

  1. The researcher will participate in the research in the project entitled “Investigation of the 3-D distribution of Hard X-ray sources related to solar eruptions: verification of the standard flare model scenario.” carried out at SRC PAS. The project leader is Dr. Tomasz Mrozek.
  2. Planned tasks include:
  3. 1) Extrapolation of photospheric magnetic fields to the corona using various approaches.
  4. 2) Quantitative analysis of HXR (imaging spectroscopy from STIX and HXI) and EUV (fluxes and DEMs) sources.
  5. 3) Analysis and interpretation of data from SO/STIX, ASO-S/HXI and ADITYA-L1/HEL1OS and SoLEXS nominal science phase.
  6. 4) Writing two science papers as a first author.

Requirements

Education Level PhD or equivalent

Skills/Qualifications

  • PhD in astrophysics, physics or equivalent;
  • Extensive knowledge of solar flare physics;
  • Extensive experience in the analysis of astronomical data (images and spectra) from X-ray and UV/EUV instruments;
  • Extensive knowledge of magnetic field extrapolation under various approaches (PFSS, NLFFF etc.).
  • Good knowledge of the details of the design of SO/STIX and ASO-S/HXI;
  • Excellent knowledge of the Python and IDL programming languages;
  • Knowledge of the statistical analysis methods;
  • Knowledge of English at a level that allows for free use of scientific literature, communication and writing scientific publications;
  • Real interest in science, commitment to scientific work, ability to think critically.

Additional Information

Terms of Employment:

  • gross salary of 9770 PLN/month
  • period of employment: 24 months starting from February 1, 2026 (date to be negotiated).
  • place of work: Wrocław, SRC PAS, Kopernika 11. Stationary work is the basic form of realization of tasks. Remote work is not possible.

Eligibility criteria

The competition is open to persons who meet the conditions specified in the Act of 30 April 2010 on the Polish Academy of Sciences (Chapter 8 Employees of scientific units and other organizational units of the Academy).

The successful candidate will be selected in an open competition conducted in accordance with the provisions of the "Regulations for Awarding Scientific Fellowships in Research Projects Financed from NCN Funds" (NCN Council Resolution 25/2019 of March 14, 2019). The candidate must meet the requirements specified in these Regulations. The Regulations also define the criteria that will guide the selection committee evaluating the submitted applications. All applicants will be equally considered for employment without attention to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran or disability status.

  • academic CV (max. 2 pages) including information on: scientific publications, awards, prizes, scholarships, scientific experience gained at home or abroad, participation in workshops, trainings and research projects, scientific achievements to date;
  • a copy of the master’s, and PhD diploma, with supplements;
  • contact information to at least two independent researchers for reference;
