Master Data Subject Matter Expert (Materials)

Your responsibilities

  • Act as the Subject Matter Expert for Master Data, providing authoritative guidance on material and business partner related processes across the end-to-end lifecycle (e.g. creation, maintenance, extensions, changes).
  • Define and validate master data models, attributes, dependencies, and ownership, ensuring alignment with business and system needs.
  • Ensure master data processes support downstream processes such as procurement, supply chain, manufacturing, finance, logistics, sales.
  • Serve as a core project team member in global or regional initiatives (e.g. SAP implementations, rollouts, carve-outs, MDG deployments, or data transformation programs).
  • Own and deliver project-specific master data deliverables, including: Process designs and documentation, Data standards and templates, Governance frameworks and RACI models, Migration rules, validation criteria, and acceptance standards
  • Support project milestones by providing expert input during design, build, test, cutover, and hyper care phases.
  • Design and review future-state material and business partner master processes, focusing on standardisation, automation, and data quality.
  • Drive alignment between global standards and local business requirements, resolving conflicts through expert recommendations.
  • Ensure consistency of material master processes across systems, regions, and business units.
  • Define and enforce master data governance principles, including data ownership, stewardship, approval workflows, and compliance rules.
  • Establish data quality standards, controls, and KPIs for material master data.
  • Act as an escalation point for complex material master data issues within projects.
  • Partner closely with IT, business process owners, supply chain, procurement, finance, and external vendors.
  • Translate business requirements into clear master data and system specifications.
  • Challenge and guide stakeholders using best practices and expert judgment.
  • Contribute to training materials, playbooks, and guidelines for material master processes and governance.
  • Support knowledge transfer to operational teams and Business Service Centres post-project.

Employer requirements

  • Material Master Data Expertise: Deep understanding of material master and business partner structures, views, dependencies, and business impact
  • Data Governance: Strong knowledge of data ownership, stewardship models, approval workflows, and compliance frameworks
  • Data Quality Management: Ability to define data quality rules, validation logic, and remediation approaches
  • Data Migration & Transformation: Experience defining migration rules, cleansing strategies, and reconciliation principles
  • Ability to work confidently with large datasets (tens or hundreds of thousands of records)
  • Capability to create structured, reusable, and auditable Excel-based deliverables
  • System Knowledge:
  • SAP ERP (ECC or S/4HANA)
  • SAP MDG (Material domain) or comparable MDM solutions
  • Process Design: Capability to design and document end-to-end master data processes
  • Change & Impact Management: Understanding how master data changes affect business processes and systems
  • Fluent in English (advanced working proficiency required)
  • Bachelors degree in IT, Data Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree or professional certifications in data management or SAP are an advantage.
  • Proven experience as a Master Data SME or Lead, with a strong focus on Material Master Data
  • Demonstrated experience working in project environments (implementations, transformations, global rollouts)
  • Hands-on experience with SAP ERP and SAP MDG (Material) is mandatory.
  • Experience defining global standards and governance models rather than performing operational execution
  • Strong analytical and conceptual thinking skills
  • Ability to translate complex topics into clear, structured recommendations
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • High attention to detail and strong commitment to data integrity
  • Confidence to challenge assumptions and drive best-practice solutions
  • Delivery-oriented mindset with a strong sense of ownership
