The Social Isolation and Loneliness in Europe Network: Evidence-Based Policy Recommendations on its Causes, Consequences, and Monitoring
The LONELY‑EU project brings together six European universities and research labs. The consortium comprises researchers, practitioners, and policymakers dedicated to addressing and reducing loneliness and social isolation within the European Union. The work carried out within the project is supported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Organisation for Economic Co‑operation and Development (OECD).
The primary objective of the project is to provide policymakers with a comprehensive assessment of the causes, consequences, and socio‑economic costs of loneliness and social isolation in each EU member state. Employing advanced statistical methods, the project will analyse existing datasets to develop a comprehensive, dynamic, accessible, and sustainable map of the socio‑economic determinants and impacts of loneliness and social isolation at both individual and societal levels. Furthermore, the project will develop the European Index of Social Isolation and Loneliness, a tool designed to monitor loneliness across all EU countries and within specific population groups.
By addressing a pressing social issue, LONELY‑EU aims to deliver evidence‑based recommendations for the prevention, mitigation, and monitoring of loneliness and social isolation in Europe. In the long term, the project seeks to establish a pan‑European network—under the patronage of European Parliament Vice‑President E. Regner and Prime Minister of North Rhine‑Westphalia H. Wüst—dedicated to supporting individuals experiencing loneliness.
