(Associate) Banking and Finance Lawyer (German speaker preferred) – based in Luxembourg

Full‑time temporary position at grade 4/5 for 1 year with the European Investment Bank (EIB) Legal Directorate (JU) – Legal Department, EU Operations – Northern Europe Division (NE) headquartered in Luxembourg. Must be present in the office regularly. Relocation support available.

This temporary replacement assignment does not anticipate extension or conversion. Interviews are scheduled for early January 2026.

Purpose

The Northern Europe Division (NE) handles legal documentation and issues for projects across Northern Europe including Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden, and the EFTA countries. The Lawyer will assist the Head of Division and Head of Department with the Head of Division and others to provide legal support to the operational directorates and carry out tasks within the division’s remit. The role offers exposure to various EIB lending products, negotiation with internal and external clients, and teamwork.

Operating Network

The Lawyer, internally referred to as (Associate) Officer Legal Services, reports to the Head of Division and collaborates with division colleagues in line with established priorities. The position may involve travel for negotiations and signatures of legal documentation and contracts.

Accountabilities

Responsibilities

  • Draft and negotiate legal documentation for lending and financing operations for:
    • projects in the aforementioned countries, notably bilateral loans with banking counterparts, public entities and major corporates
    • project finance operations, assisted by external legal counsels
    • structured finance operations, including securitisations
    • other forms of financing, including risk‑sharing structures, on a funded and unfunded basis
  • Advising on structuring, drafting of documents, legal advisory support, conclusion of contracts, completion of all related legal formalities, and legal monitoring (including loan restructuring and other post‑signature events).
  • Manage contacts and negotiations.
  • Prepare the terms of reference for external counsel and other consultants, liaise and supervise their work as necessary.
  • Complete the administrative formalities vis‑à‑vis clients which have a legal nature or have legal implications.
  • Undertake research and conduct legal studies on issues of law arising in connection with EIBs operations and in the context of developing new financial instruments/templates.
  • Develop and maintain relationships within EIB, its clients and external legal advisers, and represent EIB externally.

Qualifications

  • University degree in law, minimum equivalent to a Bachelor and preferably at Master level, and preferably qualified in German or Austrian law.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience relevant for the job, preferably in the field of bank lending and/or project finance and/or capital markets, and preferably acquired with a law firm of international repute or an in‑house legal department.
  • Knowledge of civil and commercial law of a jurisdiction relevant to the work of the Division would be an advantage.
  • Significant experience in drafting and negotiating contractual documentation in English and/or German; experience in drafting and negotiating finance documents would be an advantage.
  • Experience in structured finance and/or project finance/PPP transactions would be an advantage.
  • Very good knowledge of standard computer tools.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English. Capacity to draft and negotiate in German would be an advantage.
