Offer Description
Building the Centre of Excellence
- Active contribution to the establishment and scientific development of the Centre, including the integration of existing research groups on campus through mentoring and support for early-career researchers, ensuring synergy and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Playing a leading role in shaping research policy to enable development of partnerships within the pharmaceutical sector.
- Implementing relevant quality protocols and managing their observance (ISO, GLP, GMP)
- Defining and implementing a strategy for transitioning from basic through translational to clinical / application-oriented research, including the formulation and delivery of joint KPIs.
- Introducing mechanisms for strengthening application-oriented competencies in proof-of-concept, technology validation, and the preparation of demonstrators and prototypes.
Securing External Funding
- Attracting competitive grants and research contracts.
- Ensuring the Centre operates as a financially sustainable unit, covering research, personnel, and operational costs.
- Making effective use of and contributing to the Institute’s infrastructure (laboratories, back-office support), as well as contributing to the maintenance of staff and the servicing of high-end specialized equipment.
Building International Networks
- Strengthening internal collaboration (Łukasiewicz Research Network, WrocBiotechHub) and international cooperation with partners across Europe and globally.
- Developing long-term partnerships with academia, hospitals, and industry to enhance the Centre’s visibility and impact.
Institutional Transformation
- Acting not only within the scope of own research, but also contributing to raising the overall quality of life science research.
- Co-developing the institution’s long-term scientific and financial strategy (5–10 years), setting research priorities in line with the mission of the Institute and the expectations of the Łukasiewicz Network.
- Ensuring the global visibility and recognition of the Centre and the Institute.
Sustainability and Long-Term Development
- Responsibility for financial continuity, human resources, and infrastructure of the Centre beyond the lifetime of grant funding.
- Establish a governance model for the centre involving institute leadership, regional authorities, and other stakeholders.
- Initiating strategic partnerships with industry, clinics, and public institutions.
The candidate should possess documented, international scientific and managerial experience in the field of biomedical research, with particular emphasis on translational studies on neurological, psychiatric, and neurodegenerative disorders. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to bridge academic and industrial environments and to establish collaborative partnership networks across Europe and worldwide.
Required qualifications and experience:
- A doctoral degree in biology, neurobiology, pharmacology, or related natural sciences; additional academic titles and distinctions (e.g. honorary professor, visiting professor) will be considered an asset.
- A minimum of 15 years of experience leading research teams, including at least 5 years in managerial positions within major scientific or industrial institutions (e.g. global pharmaceutical companies, research institutes).
- A documented scientific record comprising at least 100 publications in JCR-listed journals, an H-index ≥ 40, and a minimum of 10,000 citations.
- Proven experience in leading international research programmes funded by the EU, IHI/IMI, NIH, or other international agencies, and in managing large scientific consortia (involving at least three partner countries).
- Documented collaboration with the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, including the development of research strategies, scientific partnerships, and the commercialization of research results.
- Proven ability to strategically plan the development of a research centre, including building a project portfolio, securing external funding, and managing personnel with diverse scientific profiles.
- Teaching and mentoring experience at the university level (lecturing, PhD supervision).
- Excellent command of the English language (C1/C2 level).
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills enabling the creation of integrated multidisciplinary teams and effective cooperation with public and private partners.
Specific Requirements
Desirable additional competencies:
- Experience in creating or restructuring research units (e.g. centres of excellence, translational laboratories, R&D departments).
- Familiarity with modern brain imaging techniques, behavioural modelling, big data analysis, and artificial intelligence applications in biomedical research.
- Understanding of ethical and regulatory principles governing preclinical and clinical studies.
- Participation in scientific boards, advisory committees, or strategic bodies at the international level.
Minimum operational expectations:
- Presentation of a development vision for the Centre of Excellence, including collaboration with universities, the industrial sector, and international partners.
- Availability to serve as Director for a minimum period of five years.
